As a cat owner, you know that caring for your feline friend is a year-round responsibility. Each season brings its own set of challenges and considerations when it comes to your cat's health and well-being. From keeping them cool during the hot summer months to ensuring they stay warm and safe in the winter, understanding how to adapt your care routine throughout the year is key to keeping your cat healthy and happy. In this series, we'll explore the best practices for cat care through each of the four seasons, offering tips and advice to help you provide the best possible care for your beloved pet, no matter the time of year.

Summer Care for Cats: Keeping Your Feline Friends Safe and Comfortable

Summer can be a delightful time for both you and your cat, but the rising temperatures also bring specific risks and challenges that need to be addressed. Whether your cat is an indoor lounger or an outdoor adventurer, it's essential to ensure they stay cool, hydrated, and protected from the sun. In this post, we'll guide you through the best ways to keep your cat comfortable and safe during the summer months, from preventing heatstroke to ensuring proper hydration and providing a cool, relaxing environment. Let's explore how you can make the most of the summer while keeping your feline friend happy and healthy.

1. Keeping Cats Cool IndoorsEven indoor cats can feel the heat during summer. Keeping your home cool is crucial. Try closing curtains or blinds during the hottest parts of the day to block out direct sunlight, and use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature. You can create cool resting spots by placing frozen water bottles wrapped in towels in your cat's favorite napping areas. Ceramic tiles or cooling mats specifically designed for pets can also provide a cool surface for your cat to lie on, helping them stay comfortable.

Further tips on keeping indoor cats cool are available in guides from Blue Cross and the RSPCA.

2. Hydration is KeyProper hydration is vital during the summer months. Cats often don’t drink enough water, which can lead to dehydration, especially in the heat. Ensure that fresh water is always available, and encourage your cat to drink by placing multiple water bowls around the house. A cat water fountain can be particularly effective, as many cats are naturally drawn to moving water. Incorporating wet food into their diet can also help increase their water intake, providing essential hydration during the hottest days. For outdoor cats, it's important to place water bowls in shaded areas, ensuring they have access to cool water at all times.

Additional advice on keeping cats hydrated can be found in this guide from PetMD.

3. Sun Protection for Vulnerable CatsCats can get sunburned, particularly those with lighter fur or exposed skin areas, like the tips of their ears or noses. Limiting sun exposure during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) is advisable for cats that enjoy sunbathing. For those that spend time outdoors, applying a pet-safe sunscreen to vulnerable areas can provide additional protection. Consult your veterinarian before applying any product to ensure it’s safe for your cat. Creating shaded outdoor spaces using umbrellas, awnings, or pet-specific sun shelters can also help protect your cat from harmful UV rays.

Further guidance on sun protection for cats can be found in resources from the iCC and PDSA.

4. Outdoor Safety MeasuresIf your cat has outdoor access, it’s important to ensure their safety during the summer. Create shaded areas in your garden where your cat can escape the heat, and avoid letting them out during the hottest parts of the day. Supervised outdoor time is also a good idea, as it allows you to monitor their behavior and ensure they aren’t overheating. Check for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect your cat is suffering from the heat.

Detailed information on heatstroke symptoms and prevention is available from PDSA, and the Royal Veterinary College.

5. Adjusting Activity LevelsCats may be less active during the hotter months. Avoid vigorous play sessions during the hottest times of the day, opting for early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. Interactive toys or treat puzzles can still provide mental stimulation, but be mindful of your cat’s energy levels. Incorporating cooler playtime options, such as ice cube toys, can be a fun and refreshing way for your cat to stay active without overheating.

As the summer days grow longer and warmer, it's important to remember that your cat relies on you to help them navigate the season's challenges. By taking a few simple steps to ensure their comfort and safety, you can enjoy the summer together, creating lasting memories of sunny days and peaceful afternoons. Whether it’s providing a shady spot to relax, ensuring they stay hydrated, or simply spending quality time together in the cooler parts of the day, your care and attention make all the difference.

Cats Playing Fetch? You Bet They Can!

Pic by Hanna, Pexels It's a common misconception that fetch is a game exclusively for our canine companions. But here at Kitten Kaboodle, we know better! Any cat lover who's spent time with these fascinating felines will tell you: many cats love a good game of fetch. And if you haven't experienced this joy yet, you're in for a treat! The Science Behind the Fun A recent study published in the journal Animal Cognition (Saito et al., 2023) revealed some surprising findings. It turns out that over 41% of cats engage in fetch-like behaviour! This dispels the myth that cats are solely solitary creatures, uninterested in interactive play with their humans. The research indicates that cats, just like dogs, can find joy and satisfaction in retrieving objects. So, what's the motivation behind this behaviour? Well, it seems to be a combination of factors. For some cats, it's the thrill of the chase. They love the anticipation of watching their favourite toy sail ...

Respect Your Cat Day

Apparently, on March 28th 1384, King Richard II issued a royal decree banning the eating of cats in England. Whether the edict was real or just a historical whisper passed down over time, the fact that it needed saying at all is mind-blowing. I’ll be honest—when I first heard that people used to eat cats, I was completely horrified! 😱 The idea that, once upon a time, cats weren’t respected or even seen as pets, but as food, is awful.  While it’s difficult to know how widespread cat consumption really was in medieval Europe, there are scattered historical records suggesting that in times of famine or poverty, cats (and dogs) were sadly sometimes eaten. Pic: Pixabay But maybe that’s exactly why March 28th  became Respect Your Cat Day —a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in our relationship with these incredible creatures… and how much they deserve our care, protection, and respect.
