Black Cat Appreciation Day

Today is a special day for all cat lovers—it’s Black Cat Appreciation Day!

While all cats hold a special place in our hearts, today is a time to shine a light on the often misunderstood and sometimes overlooked black cat. These beautiful felines have been the subject of superstition and myth for centuries, but those of us who have had the pleasure of sharing our lives with a black cat know that they are just as loving, playful, and full of personality as any other cat.

The Myths and Realities of Black Cats

Black cats have unfortunately been associated with various myths and superstitions throughout history. In some cultures, they were considered omens of bad luck, while in others, they were believed to bring good fortune. However, these myths have no basis in reality. The truth is that black cats are just as wonderful as any other cat, with their own unique personalities and charms.

Despite their beauty and charm, black cats are often overlooked in shelters. Studies have shown that black cats take longer to be adopted compared to cats of other colours, which is why Black Cat Appreciation Day is so important. It’s a chance to change perceptions and encourage people to give these lovely cats the forever homes they deserve.

Why Black Cats Are So Special

Black cats are truly stunning creatures. Their sleek, shiny coats and piercing eyes make them stand out, and they often seem to have a mysterious, almost magical aura. But beyond their striking appearance, black cats are known for their affectionate nature. Many black cat owners report that their cats are particularly loving, always ready to curl up on a lap or follow their human companions around the house.

Additionally, black cats are just as playful and curious as any other cat. They love to explore, chase toys, and engage in all the typical cat antics that we adore. Their personalities are as varied as their coats, and each black cat brings something special to their home.

How to Celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day

If you’re lucky enough to have a black cat in your life, today is the perfect day to spoil them a little extra. Here are a few ways you can celebrate:

  • Treat Time: Give your black cat their favourite treats or try making some homemade cat treats to show them how much you appreciate them.
  • Special Playtime: Spend some extra time playing with your black cat. Use their favourite toys or introduce something new to keep them entertained.

  • Share Their Beauty: Take some photos of your black cat and share them on social media with the hashtag #BlackCatAppreciationDay. Let the world see just how beautiful and wonderful black cats can be!
(🐾 Don't forget to share them with the Kitten Kaboodle community too 🐾)

  • Support Black Cat Adoption: If you don’t have a black cat of your own, consider supporting black cat adoption. Many shelters run special promotions on Black Cat Appreciation Day to encourage the adoption of these often-overlooked cats.

Cats Playing Fetch? You Bet They Can!

Pic by Hanna, Pexels It's a common misconception that fetch is a game exclusively for our canine companions. But here at Kitten Kaboodle, we know better! Any cat lover who's spent time with these fascinating felines will tell you: many cats love a good game of fetch. And if you haven't experienced this joy yet, you're in for a treat! The Science Behind the Fun A recent study published in the journal Animal Cognition (Saito et al., 2023) revealed some surprising findings. It turns out that over 41% of cats engage in fetch-like behaviour! This dispels the myth that cats are solely solitary creatures, uninterested in interactive play with their humans. The research indicates that cats, just like dogs, can find joy and satisfaction in retrieving objects. So, what's the motivation behind this behaviour? Well, it seems to be a combination of factors. For some cats, it's the thrill of the chase. They love the anticipation of watching their favourite toy sail ...

Respect Your Cat Day

Apparently, on March 28th 1384, King Richard II issued a royal decree banning the eating of cats in England. Whether the edict was real or just a historical whisper passed down over time, the fact that it needed saying at all is mind-blowing. I’ll be honest—when I first heard that people used to eat cats, I was completely horrified! 😱 The idea that, once upon a time, cats weren’t respected or even seen as pets, but as food, is awful.  While it’s difficult to know how widespread cat consumption really was in medieval Europe, there are scattered historical records suggesting that in times of famine or poverty, cats (and dogs) were sadly sometimes eaten. Pic: Pixabay But maybe that’s exactly why March 28th  became Respect Your Cat Day —a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in our relationship with these incredible creatures… and how much they deserve our care, protection, and respect.
