National Cat Day, US: 29th October 2024

Although National Cat Day originated in the U.S. back in 2005, its message resonates around the world. Officially celebrated on October 29th, the day was created to raise awareness about homeless cats and to encourage their adoption. At Kitten Kaboodle, we believe every day is an opportunity to celebrate the love, charm, and companionship that cats bring into our lives! 🐱💖

Why Celebrate National Cat Day?

National Cat Day isn’t just a cute event for posting adorable kitten pics (although that’s definitely encouraged!). The day serves an important purpose: to remind people that there are millions of cats in shelters waiting for their forever homes. In the U.S. alone, shelters take in 3.4 million cats each year, with a heartbreaking 2.7 million euthanized due to overcrowding and lack of resources.

This day is an opportunity for cat lovers everywhere to come together to show their support for feline welfare and encourage others to adopt, not shop!

How You Can Help

National Cat Day isn’t just about celebrating the cats you already have—it’s about making a difference for cats who are still looking for homes. Here’s how you can help:

  • Adopt a Cat: If you’ve been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, now is the perfect time! Many shelters run special adoption events on or around National Cat Day, making it easier than ever to give a cat in need a forever home.
  • Donate or Volunteer: Not ready to adopt? You can still help by donating supplies, money, or your time to local shelters. Even small contributions can make a big difference in the lives of homeless cats.

A Day for Awareness and Celebration

National Cat Day has grown over the years, with more people celebrating and raising awareness on social media. You can use hashtags like #NationalCatDay and #CatsOfInstagram to share your love for your feline friends and spread the word about adoption.

One of the key messages behind this day is the importance of spaying and neutering. Spaying or neutering your pets can help reduce the number of unwanted kittens born each year, many of whom end up in shelters. Fixing your cat is a small step that can have a big impact on preventing cat homelessness.

Celebrating Cats Beyond National Cat Day

Here’s the best part: while National Cat Day is a wonderful occasion, you don’t have to wait until October 29th to make a difference. Every day can be National Cat Day when it comes to showering your feline friend with love or helping shelter cats in need.

How to Celebrate at Home

Spoil your own cat with these fun ideas:

  • Spa Day: Give your cat a special grooming session, complete with brushing and treats.
  • New Toys: Cats love interactive toys that engage their hunting instincts.
  • Cuddle Time: Whether they’re lap cats or prefer sitting nearby, give your cat some extra love.

Let’s make every day National Cat Day by spreading love for these sweet companions. Whether you're adopting, fostering, or simply raising awareness, every action counts. 🐾💖

Respect Your Cat Day

Apparently, on March 28th 1384, King Richard II issued a royal decree banning the eating of cats in England. Whether the edict was real or just a historical whisper passed down over time, the fact that it needed saying at all is mind-blowing. I’ll be honest—when I first heard that people used to eat cats, I was completely horrified! 😱 The idea that, once upon a time, cats weren’t respected or even seen as pets, but as food, is awful.  While it’s difficult to know how widespread cat consumption really was in medieval Europe, there are scattered historical records suggesting that in times of famine or poverty, cats (and dogs) were sadly sometimes eaten. Pic: Pixabay But maybe that’s exactly why March 28th  became Respect Your Cat Day —a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in our relationship with these incredible creatures… and how much they deserve our care, protection, and respect. So What Is Respect Your Cat Day? Pic: Maxima This isn’t just a day for giving...

Cats Playing Fetch? You Bet They Can!

Pic by Hanna, Pexels It's a common misconception that fetch is a game exclusively for our canine companions. But here at Kitten Kaboodle, we know better! Any cat lover who's spent time with these fascinating felines will tell you: many cats love a good game of fetch. And if you haven't experienced this joy yet, you're in for a treat! The Science Behind the Fun A recent study published in the journal Animal Cognition (Saito et al., 2023) revealed some surprising findings. It turns out that over 41% of cats engage in fetch-like behaviour! This dispels the myth that cats are solely solitary creatures, uninterested in interactive play with their humans. The research indicates that cats, just like dogs, can find joy and satisfaction in retrieving objects. So, what's the motivation behind this behaviour? Well, it seems to be a combination of factors. For some cats, it's the thrill of the chase. They love the anticipation of watching their favourite toy sail ...
