It's time to break out the catnip and toy mice because September is here and it's officially Happy Cat Month! As fellow feline lovers, we know that every month is a celebration when it comes to our beloved cats. But this month holds a special place in our hearts, and we want to make it the most purr-fect one yet for our furry companions. So grab a cozy drink and join us as we dive into all things Happy Cat Month at Kitten Kaboodle.

What is Happy Cat Month?

Happy Cat Month is an annual celebration dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of responsible cat ownership and promoting the well-being of domestic cats. It's a time to shower our furry companions with extra love, attention, and perhaps a few extra treats! As the CATalyst Council, the creators of Happy Cat Month, puts it, "It's a whole month dedicated to the health and happiness of cats" (CATalyst Council).

Why Do We Celebrate Happy Cat Month?

Cats bring immeasurable joy, companionship, and a touch of delightful chaos into our lives. They are masters of relaxation, purveyors of purrs, and experts in the art of the afternoon nap. Happy Cat Month is a time to recognise and appreciate their unique personalities, quirky behaviours, and unwavering affection. As PetMD reminds us, "Cats deserve to be celebrated not just for a day, but for a whole month!" (PetMD). It's also an opportunity to educate ourselves about their needs, ensuring they live happy, healthy lives filled with contentment and plenty of catnip-induced bliss.

How Can You Celebrate Happy Cat Month at Home?

There are countless ways to make Happy Cat Month memorable for both you and your cat. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Schedule a Vet Visit: Ensure your cat is up-to-date on vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, and has a clean bill of health. A healthy cat is a happy cat, after all! As International Cat Care advises, “Regular vet checks are vital to help your cat live a long, happy, and healthy life” (International Cat Care).
  • Enrich Their Environment: Invest in new toys, scratching posts, or climbing structures to keep your cat entertained and mentally stimulated. Consider creating a 'catio' or safe outdoor space for them to explore and bask in the sunshine.
  • Spoil Them with Treats: Indulge your cat with their favourite treats or try out some new, healthy recipes. You could even bake some homemade cat treats - we have plenty of recipes on our blog to inspire you!
  • Quality Time: Spend extra time playing, cuddling, and bonding with your cat. Brush their fur, give them a gentle massage, or simply curl up on the sofa together for a purr-fectly relaxing afternoon.
  • Learn Something New: Use this month as an opportunity to learn more about your cat's breed, behaviour, or health. Our blog is packed with informative articles to help you become a true cat connoisseur!
  • Capture the Memories: Take photos and videos of your cat enjoying Happy Cat Month and share them on social media using the hashtag #HappyCatMonth. Don't forget to tag us @KittenKaboodle - we love seeing your furry friends!

Happy Cat Month in the Community

Happy Cat Month isn't just about celebrating at home. It's also a wonderful opportunity to get involved in your local community and support cats in need.

  • Consider Adoption: If you're ready to welcome a new furry family member, consider adopting a cat from a local shelter or rescue organisation. There are so many deserving cats waiting for their forever homes.
  • Volunteer Your Time: Shelters and rescue organisations always appreciate extra help. You could volunteer to clean cages, socialise cats, or assist with fundraising events.
  • Donate to a Cat Charity: If you're unable to adopt or volunteer, consider making a donation to a cat charity. Even a small contribution can make a big difference in the lives of cats in need.

Cats Playing Fetch? You Bet They Can!

Pic by Hanna, Pexels It's a common misconception that fetch is a game exclusively for our canine companions. But here at Kitten Kaboodle, we know better! Any cat lover who's spent time with these fascinating felines will tell you: many cats love a good game of fetch. And if you haven't experienced this joy yet, you're in for a treat! The Science Behind the Fun A recent study published in the journal Animal Cognition (Saito et al., 2023) revealed some surprising findings. It turns out that over 41% of cats engage in fetch-like behaviour! This dispels the myth that cats are solely solitary creatures, uninterested in interactive play with their humans. The research indicates that cats, just like dogs, can find joy and satisfaction in retrieving objects. So, what's the motivation behind this behaviour? Well, it seems to be a combination of factors. For some cats, it's the thrill of the chase. They love the anticipation of watching their favourite toy sail ...

Respect Your Cat Day

Apparently, on March 28th 1384, King Richard II issued a royal decree banning the eating of cats in England. Whether the edict was real or just a historical whisper passed down over time, the fact that it needed saying at all is mind-blowing. I’ll be honest—when I first heard that people used to eat cats, I was completely horrified! 😱 The idea that, once upon a time, cats weren’t respected or even seen as pets, but as food, is awful.  While it’s difficult to know how widespread cat consumption really was in medieval Europe, there are scattered historical records suggesting that in times of famine or poverty, cats (and dogs) were sadly sometimes eaten. Pic: Pixabay But maybe that’s exactly why March 28th  became Respect Your Cat Day —a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in our relationship with these incredible creatures… and how much they deserve our care, protection, and respect.
