As the summer sun brightens up our gardens here in the UK, it's the perfect time to review a product that brings a touch of greenery and joy to our feline friends: Trixie Cat Grass Seeds. Based on my personal experience and the reviews on Amazon, here's an in-depth look at this product.

First Impressions and Initial Setup

The Trixie Cat Grass Seeds come with a plastic bowl for growing the grass, which initially seemed convenient. However, my first attempt at using this bowl didn't go as planned. The seeds did not sprout effectively, likely due to the lack of proper drainage and the quality of the provided medium. Many Amazon reviewers had a similar experience, mentioning that the supplied bowl wasn't the best for cultivating healthy cat grass.

Learning from this, I decided to pot the seeds in a proper plant pot with drainage holes, using a mix of good quality compost and sand. Here's the process I followed:

Successful Growth with Proper Potting

  • Potting: I used a plant pot with drainage holes to ensure excess water could escape, preventing waterlogging. I also placed some large pebbles at the bottom for weight and drainage.

  • Soil Preparation: A mix of general purpose garden compost and sand was used to provide the seeds with a nutrient-rich and well-draining environment.

  • Sowing and Covering: After sowing the seeds, I placed a clear plastic cover over the pot for the first 2-3 days to create a humid, greenhouse-like environment. Once the grass was an inch tall I removed the plastic cover. Cling-film could be used if disposed of properly.

Within a week, the cat grass sprouted beautifully, as you can see in the photo at the head of this post. This method proved highly effective, resulting in lush, green cat grass that my cats absolutely love.

What Others Say

Based on the Amazon reviews, the general consensus is that the Trixie Cat Grass Seeds can be hit or miss depending on the growing conditions. Key points from other users include:

Positive Feedback: Once properly potted, many users found the grass to grow well and be greatly appreciated by their cats. Some reviewers noted that their cats enjoyed the grass both for nibbling and playing.

Challenges: Similar to my experience, several users mentioned difficulties with the initial bowl setup, advising to use a proper pot instead.

Reactions: It's important to note that individual cats can have different reactions to cat grass. While many cats enjoy nibbling on and playing with the grass, some cats might not show much interest. Factors such as a cat's personal preferences, age, and dietary habits can influence their reaction to the grass. Observing your cat's behaviour and preferences will help you determine how beneficial cat grass can be for them.

Conclusion

Overall, the Trixie Cat Grass Seeds are a worthwhile purchase if you're willing to put in a little extra effort to ensure the right growing conditions. The key is to avoid the supplied bowl and opt for a pot with good drainage, combined with quality soil. Your cat will surely appreciate the fresh, home-grown grass!

Recommendations

  • Potting: Use a proper plant pot with drainage holes, and use large pebbles at base if safe to do so for weight and added drainage.

  • Soil Mix: Combine good quality compost with sand for better growth.

  • Initial Care: Cover the pot with plastic for the first few days to encourage sprouting.

  • Maintenance: Place the pot in a sunny spot and water regularly but avoid overwatering.

By following these steps, you can achieve a thriving pot of cat grass, providing your feline friend with a delightful treat.

Cats Playing Fetch? You Bet They Can!

Pic by Hanna, Pexels It's a common misconception that fetch is a game exclusively for our canine companions. But here at Kitten Kaboodle, we know better! Any cat lover who's spent time with these fascinating felines will tell you: many cats love a good game of fetch. And if you haven't experienced this joy yet, you're in for a treat! The Science Behind the Fun A recent study published in the journal Animal Cognition (Saito et al., 2023) revealed some surprising findings. It turns out that over 41% of cats engage in fetch-like behaviour! This dispels the myth that cats are solely solitary creatures, uninterested in interactive play with their humans. The research indicates that cats, just like dogs, can find joy and satisfaction in retrieving objects. So, what's the motivation behind this behaviour? Well, it seems to be a combination of factors. For some cats, it's the thrill of the chase. They love the anticipation of watching their favourite toy sail ...

Respect Your Cat Day

Apparently, on March 28th 1384, King Richard II issued a royal decree banning the eating of cats in England. Whether the edict was real or just a historical whisper passed down over time, the fact that it needed saying at all is mind-blowing. I’ll be honest—when I first heard that people used to eat cats, I was completely horrified! 😱 The idea that, once upon a time, cats weren’t respected or even seen as pets, but as food, is awful.  While it’s difficult to know how widespread cat consumption really was in medieval Europe, there are scattered historical records suggesting that in times of famine or poverty, cats (and dogs) were sadly sometimes eaten. Pic: Pixabay But maybe that’s exactly why March 28th  became Respect Your Cat Day —a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in our relationship with these incredible creatures… and how much they deserve our care, protection, and respect.
