Respect Your Cat Day

Apparently, on March 28th 1384, King Richard II issued a royal decree banning the eating of cats in England. Whether the edict was real or just a historical whisper passed down over time, the fact that it needed saying at all is mind-blowing.

I’ll be honest—when I first heard that people used to eat cats, I was completely horrified! 😱
The idea that, once upon a time, cats weren’t respected or even seen as pets, but as food, is awful.
While it’s difficult to know how widespread cat consumption really was in medieval Europe, there are scattered historical records suggesting that in times of famine or poverty, cats (and dogs) were sadly sometimes eaten.

But maybe that’s exactly why March 28th became Respect Your Cat Day—a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in our relationship with these incredible creatures… and how much they deserve our care, protection, and respect.

So What Is Respect Your Cat Day?

This isn’t just a day for giving your cat an extra treat (although we’re sure they’d approve). Respect Your Cat Day is about truly acknowledging your cat’s individuality, boundaries, and needs. It’s a chance to pause and reflect on how well we’re doing in giving our cats not just love—but the kind of life they actually want to live.

It’s easy to think of respect in human terms—please and thank you, good manners, the usual. But for cats, respect means understanding their unique personalities. It means recognising when they want affection and when they’d rather be left to nap in peace. It means providing stimulation, safety, space, and choice.

Ways to Celebrate and Show Respect

Here are a few simple (but powerful) ways you can show your cat some real respect today:

  • Listen to their body language:
Cats are brilliant communicators—if we’re paying attention. Watch how your cat positions their tail, ears, and whiskers. A swishing tail might mean they’re overstimulated, while slow blinks are feline “I love yous.” Respect starts with observation and patience.

  • Create a cat-friendly space:
Whether it’s a perch by the window, a cardboard box fortress, or a cozy nook under the bed, every cat deserves a place they can call their own. Consider vertical space too—cat trees or shelves can make your home feel more secure and enriched.

  • Offer choice and autonomy:
One of the easiest ways to show respect? Let your cat decide. Let them choose when to come to you for affection, when to play, and when to retreat. The more they feel in control, the more likely they are to seek out connection on their own terms.

  • Engage their instincts:
Cats are hunters at heart. Toys that mimic prey—like feather wands or wriggly mice—help satisfy that natural drive. Even a scrunched-up paper ball can provide that satisfying pounce. Respecting your cat means feeding their brain as much as their belly.

  • Keep their health in check:
A respectful relationship includes health care, too. Whether it’s booking a long-overdue vet check or reviewing their diet, now is a great time to take stock. Is your cat due a dental? Is their food meeting their age and activity level? Prevention is the ultimate act of love.
